Charles Rennie Mackintosh designed Scotland Street
School. It was a functioning school up until 1979, today it is a
fascinating museum. Charles Rennie Mackintosh was Glasgow's most
celebrated architect. Scotland Street School tells the
story of education in Scotland over a hundred years, from the late
19th century to the late 20th century.
Scotland Street offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, three reconstructed classrooms gives you the chance to see what school days were like in the reign of Queen Victoria, during World War II, and in the 1950s and 60s. You can also hear ex-pupils and teachers reminisce about their own school days.
Scotland Street School museum is a must-see for Mackintosh fans; the building is a wonderful example of his architectural style, and includes a Mackintosh room where you can study the architect's designs for the building.
The Scotland Street School museum regularly hosts temporary exhibitions and fun family events, and visitors can enjoy refreshments and browse for souvenirs at the Willow Café and Gift Shop.
Open: Tuesday to Thursday and Saturday 10am-5pm, Friday and Sunday 11am-5pm. Closed Mondays.
