Cafe Source...
Beneath the impressive St Andrew's In The Square church lies a quiet gem. Café Source is an airy space, where white lights shine cross stylish aluminium furniture, and onto photos of musicians who've played the venue. It's a nice combination of arts cafe, informal bistro and modern Glasgow watering-hole. The menu tends to these needs too, with salads (confit duck, king scallop and tiger prawn), sandwiches and pub grub such as pie 'n' peas alongside hearty Scottish fare. The Cullen skink is lovely, cleanly tasting of potato, then cream, then haddock. Cuts of meat, including braised shin of beef and butterflied chicken breast require seasoning on their own, but are intelligently accompanied - the former with creamy, salty dauphinois potatoes; the latter with ham hough risotto and a rich, gamey sauce. Flavour combinations work well, as exemplified by the black and white pudding stack - the coarseness of one leading into the sweetness of the other and with a whisky jus providing a cutting edge. In terms of setting, and eating, it's impressive value for money.
